Michaël J.A. Girard, PhD

Biography

Dr Girard is currently the head of the Ophthalmic Engineering & Innovation Laboratory (OEIL) at the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI). He also Co-Heads the Bioengineering & Devices Research Group. Dr Girard has strong expertise in Ophthalmic Engineering with a focus on Artificial Intelligence, Biomedical Imaging, Ocular Biomechanics, and Ophthalmic Devices. His research has especially focused on optic neuropathies (including glaucoma), but also myopia, corneal disorders, and cataract. Dr Girard’s research has remained translational, and he is the founder of the Singapore start-up company Abyss Processing Pte Ltd, that provides 3D AI solutions to simplify and improve glaucoma diagnosis & prognosis. Dr Girard has authored 100+ papers in top Ophthalmology and Engineering journals, has given 50+ invited talks, has received 30+ research grants & 20+ research awards.



Postdoctoral Fellows

Rosmin Elsa Mohan, PhD

Biography

Rosmin is a Research Fellow in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and an Adjunct Research Fellow at the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI).

She joined NUS after her postdoc at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore and a PhD from India. She did her PhD in nonlinear optics studying propagation of solitons in planar waveguides from Amrita University, India. Her work at NTU was on phase retrieval using interferometric and non interferometric optical setups for optical metrology and biomedical applications.

Her current research interests at NUS include setting up a Low Coherence Tissue Interferometry setup and a 3 beam Optical Coherence Tomography setup for 3D imaging of the ocular layers in collaboration with the Singapore Eye Research Institute.


Than Chuangsuwanich, PhD


Biography

Thanadet is a Research Fellow in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, National University of Singapore (NUS).

Thanadet received his BEng and PhD in Biomedical Engineering from NUS in 2014 and 2019 respectively.

He is now working on a computational model to study blood flow and oxygen diffusion in the micro-capillary network of the lamina cribrosa. He believes that the development of a comprehensive model would greatly enhance our understanding of open-angle glaucoma pathophysiology.


Satish Kumar Panda, PhD


Biography

Satish is a Research Fellow in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS).

Satish received his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from NUS in 2019. Prior to NUS, he had obtained a Master's degree in applied mechanics (IIT Delhi, India-TU Darmstadt, Germany) and a Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering (NIT Durgapur, India). In addition, he has 4 years of R&D experience in various automotive industries.

His area of research interest lies in electromechanics and soft tissue modelling. He is currently working on Artificial Intelligence and Biomechanics for Improved Glaucoma Diagnosis.



PhD Candidates


David Tan, BEng


Biography

David is currently a PhD candidate in the department of Biomedical Engineering at the National University of Singapore. He received his BEng in Biomedical Engineering from NUS in year 2014.

He is currently working on the a project aimed at identifying mechanical properties of the cornea in-vivo through the use of inverse finite element. His final year BEng project was titled the "Finite Element Modelling of Cornea Biomechanics".


Devalla Sripad, B.Tech


Biography

Devalla Sripad is currently a PhD student in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the National University of Singapore. He received his B.Tech. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from National Institute of Technology Trichy,India(2012-2016).

He had been working in the field of robotics,extensively in domains such as control systems, hardware design and image processing.

He is currently working on developing novel compensation and staining techniques to improve the quality of OCT images.


Liam Fisher, BEng


Biography

Liam is a PhD candidate at the NUS Graduate School of Integrative Sciences and Engineering (NGS). He received his Bachelor of Engineering from the NUS Department of Biomedical Engineering in 2016.

His research interests include nonlinear solid mechanics and finite element analysis. Currently he is attempting to characterise the biomechanics of eye movements and the associated deformation of the optic nerve, potentially establishing links to glaucoma and other ocular pathologies.


Jin Yuejiao, BEng


Biography

Yuejiao is currently an NGS (NUS Graduate School for Integrative Science and Engineering) scholar at the National University of Singapore. She received her BEng in Engineering Science Program from NUS in July 2016.

Yuejiao has been working in the field of photonics and optics during her undergraduate study. She is currently working on a computational model to study the biomechanics of the ocular pulse.


Haris Cheong, BEng


Biography

Haris is currently a PhD student in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS). He received his Bachelor's in Biomedical Engineering from NUS in 2016.

Currently, Haris is working on using Artificial Intelligence to process and enhance Optical Coherence Tomography images.


Sylvi F. R. Irnadiastputri, BEng


Biography

Sylvi is a PhD student in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS). She received her Bachelor's in Biomedical Engineering from NUS in 2018.

She is currently working on a computational model to study the effects of aging and blood pressure on intraocular pressure, potentially establishing links to glaucoma.

Chin Zhi Yun, BEng


Biography

Zhi Yun is currently a Research Engineer in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at National University of Singapore (NUS).

Zhi Yun received her BEng in Biomedical Engineering from NUS in 2015. During her Final Year Project, she had worked on the quantitative mapping of collagen fibre orgranization in porcine eyes using small angle light scattering.

Sri Gowtham Thakku, BEng


Biography

Gowtham was a Research Assistant jointly appointed by the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI) and the Department of Biomedical Engineering, National University of Singapore (NUS). He graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from NUS (2013).


William CW Chung, PhD

Biography

William was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS). William received his BEng (Mechanical Engineering, with Honours 2nd Class Upper), MSc (Bioinformatics) and PhD from NUS. He was the recipient for both the NUS-BII scholarship (2003-2005) and the NUS Research Scholarship (2007-2011).

Khai Sing Chin, MSc

Biography

Ms Chin was a Research Engineer in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the National University of Singapore. She received a B.Eng in Bioengineering from NTU (2005-2009) and a MPhil in Computing from the University of Dundee, UK (2010-2012).


Meghna Rakesh Beotra, PhD

Biography

Meghna was a PhD student in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the National University of Singapore. She received her B.E. in Biomedical Engineering from Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal University, India (2009-2013).


Xiaofei Wang, PhD


Biography

Xiaofei was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS). Xiaofei received his bachelor’s degree in underground engineering from Central South University, China (2008) and his Master’s degree in structural engineering from Dalian University of Technology, China (2011). He obtained his PhD degree in 2014 from the University of New South Wales, Australia. During his PhD, he explored the possible causes of bitemporal hemianopia by investigating the biomechanics of optic chiasmal compression.


Zhang Liang, PhD


Biography

Zhang Liang was a Research Fellow in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS). Liang received his BEng in Engineering Science Program from NUS in July 2013. Upon graduation, Liang accepted the NGS (NUS Graduate School for Integrative Science and Engineering) Ph.D. scholarship at NUS. During his Ph.D. study, he investigated ocular biomechanics through computational techniques for the purpose of glaucoma diagnosis and prognosis. Computational techniques used include finite element method, virtual fields method, differential evolution, and digital image correlation. In December 2017, Liang was conferred his Ph.D.


Pham Tan Hung, MSc


Biography

Hung was a Research Engineer in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at National University of Singapore (NUS). He is concurrently pursuing a master in Computing – Computer Science Specialisation. Hung received his BEng in Biomedical Engineering with minor in Computer Science from NUS in 2017.


Royston Tan, PhD


Biography

Royston was a PhD candidate in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, National University of Singapore (NUS). He received his BEng in Biomedical Engineering from NUS in 2015.


Tin A Tun, MBBS, MSc, PhD


Biography

Dr Tun was a part-time PhD candidate in the department of Biomedical Engineering at the National University of Singapore. He graduated from the University of Medicine (1), Myanmar (2005) and received his MSc in Biomedical Engineering from the Nanyang Technological University in 2007.
